Having graduated from Edinburgh University with an MA in English Literature, Carter moved to the United States. In addition to writing, she studies fixed trapeze, and yoga. She currently resides in Brooklyn.
Before her move to the United States in 2000, she worked for various literary organizations in Scotland, including Chapman. Her work has appeared in Hanging Loose, The Brooklyn Rail, Bloom, and Spectacle, among others, and in The Best Creative Non-fiction (W.W. Norton, 2007). She is the editor of various collections including Word Jig: New Fiction from Scotland (Hanging Loose, 2003) and Voices of the City (Hanging Loose, 2004). Her first book, The Trapeze Diaries was published by Hanging Loose Press in 2008.[1]
Additionally, she teaches memoir at the Gotham Writers' Workshop.
